Girls Can’t Play Football?
2 years ago, while working out with my old trainer on the Art Museum steps, I ran into 2 extremely in shape females. Mid-workout, they had stopped to talk to me and my trainer and asked if I would be interested in playing semi-pro tackle football. Yep, they were tackle football players. I quickly replied “sign me up” as I am always up for a new adventure. I attended tryouts for the team and about a month later I began practicing. I knew nothing about the game and to this day am still a bit clueless, but I love to play, after all, where else can you legally attack someone lol. For the last two years I have had the honor to play football with and meet some of the best female athletes. These women have careers, families, keep themselves in the best physical shape imaginable and still manage to attend practice and travel with the team. These women have helped cheer me up after a bad day, helped me lose weight, get in shape, and recognize that I too am an athlete. This year I am struggling with returning to the team due to knee pain and general disorganization with the team, but I know if I don’t play I will most likely regret it. Something tells me my hesitation will vanish after the first tryout.
Currently, the Women’s Football Alliance “WFA” (the league I play in) has 64 teams in the country. While I know that many people don’t even know that the WFA, the Independent Women’s Football League “IWFL”, and other woman’s tackle football leagues exist, I feel that it is only a matter of time before we are watching WFA games on TV just like we watch the NFL. There are even a few retired players from the NFL coaching in the WFA. This year for the first time, the WFA’s Superbowl was played at Heinz Field, so progress is being made….just saying.
While I love the game, I am really playing for something much greater. I play for all the little girls who wanted to do what the boys were doing and were told “You can’t play football, you’re a girl” or “Girls don’t play football”. Guess what? Girls do play football…How do you like them apples? :)
